Low-Cost Health Insurance (ACA)

Health coverage can feel out of reach on a tight budget — but many low-income households qualify for plans through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace with very low, and sometimes $0, monthly premiums thanks to income-based subsidies.

How it works

The ACA marketplace lets you compare plans from private insurers in your state. Depending on your household income and size, you may qualify for a premium tax credit that lowers your monthly cost, and for cost-sharing reductions that lower what you pay at the doctor.

When you can enroll

Most people enroll during Open Enrollment (typically November to mid-January). Outside that window, a major life change — moving, losing other coverage, having a baby, or a change in household — can open a Special Enrollment Period, usually for 60 days.

Good to know: A licensed agent can help you compare plans at no cost to you. Enrolling through the official marketplace is always free.
